Megz 2 months agoI've been in this place at least three times and never disappointed me. I have to drive 2 hours to get here but totally worth it!!! is simply oustanding!!! Beyond the completely authentic menu and preparation, the flavor is out of this world. The barbacoa, al pastor, and carnitas tacos are exquisite... and the chicharrón gorditas are delicious. For dessert, my favs are fresh-from-the-fryer churros with cajeta—which were heavenly—or the Flan Napolitano. True to the restaurant's name, this place doesn't just nourish the body; it is a treat for the palate and food for the soul. Besides, I always order food to go and liters of salsa of all kind they have. honestly...the flavors I have tried here are top notch.
Anthony 5 months agoThis restaurant is amazing and if you’re in the area craving delicious Mexican food you have to check it out. I’d put this in the top 3 Mexican restaurants I’ve been to, to include some other well known establishments in Philadelphia. No knock on them but this place will be up there with them once word gets around. It is a smaller restaurant with 4 tables that seat parties of 4 and 2 tables that seat parties of 2 but when I came by at 4:30pm on a Friday it was empty. I ordered the tacos al pastor and a hurache without meat. It came with a red and a green salsa on the side and also pickled habanero mixed with onions, orange juice, and oregano. It is spicy but is absolutely delicious and went great on everything. I judge a place a lot on their tortilla/masa creations and this place nailed it. The tortillas were fresh and are the perfect texture. The meat for the tacos was well seasoned and not too fatty, but still had the richness you’re looking for in carne al pastor. The pineapple was a nice touch. The hurache was topped with beans, cream, onions, and nopales. Everything went well together and the masa for the hurache was perfect, crunchy on the outside but tender on the inside. I liked the food so much I decided to get flan for dessert. It came with a blackberry jam and whipped cream on the side. It was the consistency I personally like, dense and creamy. The fruit was a nice contrast to the richness of the dessert. In addition to the food, the staff was friendly, welcoming, and answered any questions I have. Prices were more than fair for the portions. Unfortunately I live on the west coast but if I’m ever back in Philadelphia this would be my top spot to revisit. If you’re in the area you have to give it a try if you like Mexican food. Highly recommended!
Nicholas a month agoAwesome little place if you like authentic homemade Mexican food. I got the barbacoa tacos and chips. Everything was terrific!
Leslie 5 months agoI was looking for parking at my favorite restaurant of 30 years nearby and discovered this restaurant on a nice quiet side street. The hidalgo-style barbacoa they have on the weekends was delicious, with a nice smoky consume. It came with a nice serving of cactus and caramelized onions. We just got back from CDMX and were craving El Pastor and they have the real Mexican taste here. Nopales quesadilla and guac were very tasty and all tortillas were homemade. Enjoyed talking to our server and service was very good.
Caitlin W a month agoWe love Alma de Mexico. It baffles me that we’re often the only people there. The enchiladas, burritos, and barbacoa tacos are all incredible. Guac and salsas are also excellent. Barbacoa is weekends (including Friday) only. You have to try it!!! Looking forward to coming back for breakfast sometime to try the chilaquiles and cafe de olla. Support this excellent local business!!
