Jack Wittmayer 4 months agoSuper yummy and filling meal! As is typical for mission burritos, you get what could honestly be two meals for the price of one. I got the California burrito with carne asada. The tortilla was excellent. The first few bites were okay but it got better midway through as I got to the cheese and the juicier meat. Unfortunately there was very little pico and avocado, but they didn’t skimp on the meat at all so I guess it balances out. The chips and salsa were just okay. I thought I had to pay for them separately but they ended up bringing them out with my burrito anyway. The Mexican hot chocolate was a winner. Huge size in a stylish cup. Just make sure you don’t burn your tongue so you can taste the rest of your meal! :) Service was quick and easy. Pay at the counter. Credit card is fine. Music and atmosphere are great. Probably too loud if you want to have an intimate conversation but just right if you’re hoping to kick back.
Suman Hazra 7 months agoI absolutely loved this place. I went there for lunch on a Saturday and when I got, I was able to find a a table, but just after 15 minutes, it got filled up completely, and there was a line to get a table. The restaurant itself is pretty small and intimate, and it has a lot of very colourful decoration, which makes you feel like you in some carnival. I want to try a bunch of things. Everything was fresh and they told me that it would take up to 20 minutes to make my food, which was such a refreshing change from places that pre-cook your food. I was more than happy to wait. I got the tamales first. This was my first time having a actual tamale outside of the trader Joes frozen one, and it was so good. I was taken a bag by the beans and potatoes with the chicken filling, but it was so hot with the two salsas. Also, it was steaming hot. I also got the quesa birra as that is one of my favourite things to get, and this one was honestly above average. The taco could be Chris up better, and the feeling could be a little more generous, but the taste was on point. The last thing I got was the papusa and again, this was my first time trying one, so I am not sure if this was a good one, but it was very tasty. It was hot and hearty went well with the pickled vegetables. The host was so nice and welcoming and made me feel really comfortable with the menu that I was largely unfamiliar with. I will definitely be back and bring more people.
Kevin Li a month agoWent on a Sunday around 7pm. It was pretty busy and there was a guy playing the guitar so it was a pretty lively place. I ordered a tlayudas with carne asada. It is a big crispy tortilla topped with refried beans, meat, cheese lettuce, tomatoes and avocados. They also provide you with red and green salsa, the red one is pretty spicy and the green is a mild sauce. It was really flavorful and the meat was juicy and tender. This dish can easily feed 2-4 people so it's great for groups. I also got a pork tamale and it was well seasoned and had a good amount of filling and the masa was light and soft. The chicken and cheese papusas were also really good. It had a crispy exterior and flavorful filling and it comes with salsa and pickled vegetables. The food did take about 15 minutes to come out since it is made fresh but it is worth the wait. There is some seating but not too much since the place is kinda small. The staff were really friendly and welcoming. I would definitely recommend coming here.
Roy Seto 10 months agoDelicious and authentic Oaxacan food with gracious service and cheerfully colorful decor too near 17th & Mission. Recommend! During my friend’s and my lunch visit in early September 2025, crispy roasted Oaxacan grasshoppers (chapulines) were in season, and La Oaxaqueña’s were crunchy and tasty just like I remember from my trips to Oaxaca in years past. We tried both shrimp and chicken tacos as well as the traditional Oaxacan “tlayudas” (extra-large crispy corn tortillas topped with refried beans, meat, melted Oaxacan string cheese, and salsa, big enough to serve two, for about $20). I enjoyed them all! For dessert, we tasted sweet fried plantains with the traditional sour cream as well as Mexican alfajores (cookies). The space was comfortable for meeting my friend, a new professional connection, for a networking lunch. And the colorful decor definitely brought back memories of Oaxaca and made for a lively and upbeat vibe for our first meeting as well. One member of the couple sharing lunch at the table next to us ordered the chicken with black chocolate mole sauce traditionally served at Oaxacan weddings (mole negro fandango), and that looked authentic, too, though I did not taste it this visit. During our time in Oaxaca, this was the signature dish that was served in fine-dining restaurants. I definitely will take my wife to try La Oaxaqueña’s version of that dish for date night sometime. And I think this would be a suitable and fun place to meet someone new, not just in a professional networking setting, but also for a first or second date. The person at the counter when we were there was friendly, helpful, and welcoming, and they cheerfully accommodated my hanging out on the Wi-Fi with my laptop after lunch until the beginning of the dinner service. I’ll be back for more at La Oaxaqueña!
Griselda Rodriguez 2 months agoFirst time here I’ve always passed by but never been inside, first thing as I walked in was the vibrant colors all over the walls and tables… such beautiful vibe! Next the cleanliness. All tables were clean and floor was spotless! Next was our cashier! Her spirit was jolly! Super happy and very helpful in explaining menu items including the tlayuda which we ended up purchasing! Also tried the panucho and huarache. Presentation and flavor was A1! shout out to our cashier Sarahi! We need more people like Sarahi in this world!
